Pat Cummins Expected to Feature a Key Part in Iconic Rivalry

Pat Cummins bowling

Pat Cummins has claimed over 300 dismissals in 71 five-day games with an average of 22.10.

Australia's chair of selectors George Bailey has declared that captain Pat Cummins will play a "major part" in the upcoming historic rivalry.

Speculation had been growing that Cummins might be unavailable due to a ongoing back issue that was still troubling him.

Earlier indications from team management suggested no official announcement had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the Test matches scheduled to begin on the 21st of November in the WACA.

Bailey expressed that the captain is progressing and felt positive about the likelihood of participating.

"We know that time is getting short and there are permutations involved, not just his injury, but additional elements," Bailey remarked.

"We're encouraged. There's strong faith that he'll participate in a significant role. Ideally it's the first Test. Should that not happen, we'll reassess."

Previous Setbacks

He was sidelined Australia's limited-overs series against India and New Zealand recently after medical tests showed a lumbar bone stress.

He has a history of recurring issues, with recurrences in multiple past seasons leading to absences from several home seasons in a limited period.

The bowler mentioned he would be ""aggressive" and "take risks" in his comeback strategy to make the squad for the series.

Bailey noted that there was no confirmation if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his rehabilitation but admitted it was "getting tight" for him to regain fitness for the initial match.

Contingency Plans

If he's unavailable, veteran batsman Smith will lead the side.

All-rounder Cameron Green was recently pulled out from the ODI lineup for their ODI contests against India as a safety move because of an abdominal issue.

The selector characterized it as a "slight concern and confirmed that he'll feature in the Sheffield Shield, so will be "ideally positioned to resume bowling."

"Considerable effort has gone into building out the plan for him to participate for the opening match as an dual-role player," the selector detailed.

"Originally, he'd only feature in the initial matches regardless. The way he swings the cricket bat in white-ball cricket, even if it just sets him back for another day, we opted to approach this more conservatively."
